If you heard her new single or not Lana Del Rey has made her spot in the top 100 ITunes for a couple of weeks. Her style is different and she has a way with her music.
Her real name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant and was born on June 21, 1986. Her stage name is Lana Del Rey. She started writing music when she was 18 and she signed her first recording contract when she was 22 years old. She released her first digital album in January 2010, called Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant. She then signed a joint contract with Interscope, Polydor and Stanger Records in July 2011.
She grew up in Lake Placid, New York until the age of 15 she was sent to Kent School, a boarding school in Connecticut for three years to deal with her alcohol dependence. At the age of 18, she headed to the Bronx to attend Fordham University to study philosophy. From there that is where she found her passion to sing.
Stanger Records signed her after uploading a few of her tracks on YouTube. They then released her debut single, “Video Games.” She signed a joint deal with Interscope Records and Polydor to work on her second album Born to Die. This album was released on January 31, 2012 worldwide and reached number one in 11 countries. Born to Die sold 3.4 million copies in 2012, making it the fifth-best-selling album on 2012.
Cheryl Cole confirmed in May 2012 that Del Rey would write her new album A Million Nights. H&M confirmed that she would be modeling and recording a cover version of the popular 1950’s prom anthem “Blue Velvet” for their 2012 Autumn Campaign.
Lana Del Rey’s Paradise Edition of Born to Die was set to be released on November 12. With the release of her third EP, Paradise, Del Rey spawned her second top 10 album in the United States, debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200 with 67,000 copies sold in its first week.
The Next Big Thing
She is currently working on her third studio album. Lana seventh single, “Dark Paradise” appeared on iTunes as an international single on March 1. A remix of “Summertime Sadness” by Cedric Gervais, peaked at number 6, becoming her first American top ten hit. Along with Paradise, she plans to launch a short film titled Tropico that features the songs “Bel Air”, “Body Electric”, and “Gods and Monsters”.
Lana Del Rey music has been noted for its cinematic sound and its references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of 1950’s and “60’s Americana. Her overall style of singing is trip hop, pop and alternative rock.
The first time I heard of Lana was the remix of her song “Summertime Sadness”. This song can relate to so many people and the beat to it is amazing along with her vocals. I can’t wait for her next album that she is working on. Its going to be good!
